The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) just reported that Facebook has partnered with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The center handles nationwide “Amber Alerts”.
Should the location Facebook detects you are at be near where an abduction occurred, an Amber Alert, including a photograph, will appear in your News Feed.
Individual Facebook users have shared alerts in the past, most without a photograph, so what is planned is an improvement, with expanded reach.
John Ryan, president and chief executive of the center was quoted as saying:
“It’s the closest thing to real time that we can hope for.”
The alerts will be issued, as appropriate, and only for a 24-hour period, in second position of the News Feed.
